Chiropractic Adjustments

Hands-on spinal care that gets to the root of your pain, not just the surface.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a controlled, hands-on technique applied to joints of the spine or extremities that have lost their normal range of motion. When joints move poorly, they irritate surrounding nerves and muscles, causing pain, stiffness, and dysfunction that spreads beyond the original problem area.

The goal of an adjustment is to restore proper joint movement, reduce nerve irritation, and allow the body to heal and function the way it is designed to.

How we adjust at Hackett Family Chiropractic

Dr. Hackett is trained in Diversified Technique, the most widely used and extensively studied method of spinal manipulation. Diversified is a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust that is precise, efficient, and effective for a wide range of conditions.

For patients who prefer a gentler approach, including elderly patients, children, post-surgical patients, or those with osteoporosis, we use low-force techniques that achieve the same outcomes without the classic cracking sensation. You do not have to choose between effective care and comfort.

What does an adjustment feel like?

Most patients feel immediate relief after an adjustment. Some notice mild, temporary soreness similar to how you feel after a good workout. This is normal and typically resolves within 24 hours. As care progresses, most patients find the soreness decreases while relief increases and lasts longer.

The popping sound you may hear is simply the release of gas from the joint space, the same phenomenon as cracking your knuckles. It is not bones grinding and is nothing to be concerned about.

Conditions that respond well to adjustments

  • Lower back pain, acute and chronic
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches
  • Mid-back pain and thoracic tightness
  • Shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle joint dysfunction
  • Postural strain from desk work or repetitive activity
  • Whiplash from auto accidents

Is it safe?

Chiropractic adjustments performed by a licensed doctor are among the safest treatments available for musculoskeletal conditions. Serious complications are extremely rare. We conduct a thorough exam before beginning care to confirm that adjustments are appropriate for your situation, and we will tell you honestly if a different approach is a better fit.
